Badminton New Point System 3 X 45, Here's The Explanation
JAKARTA The International Badminton Federation (BWF) introduced a new 3 x 45 points system. This format will be tested in the 2025 Suhandinata Cup (BWF World Junior Team Championships) tournament.
The championship will take place on October 6-19 2025 at the National Center of Excellence, Guwahati, India. Apart from India, this point system will also be used in the continental-level Team Junior Championships in 2026.
This is the second time the World Junior Team Championship has used two different points formats. Earlier in last year's edition when Indonesia came out as champions, the tournament used a 110-point relay score system.
The following is an explanation of the relay score system (estafet) 3 x 45.
SEE ALSO:
1. The 3 x 45 format makes one match consist of three sets. The team that wins in two automatic sets becomes the winner (best of three).
2. Each set consists of five games playing the men's singles category, women's singles, men's doubles, women's doubles, and of course mixed doubles.
3. Each game will look for nine points without settings. So, if the score is 8-8, the winner is the first to reach the ninth point. In a total set collect 45 points: 9 points x 5 categories = 45 points.
4. The minimum number of players in one team is six people (three men and three daughters) and a maximum number of 16 players (eight men and eight daughters).
5. One player plays a maximum of three games in each set.
6. interval regulation: Interval time every set is three minutes, then intervals in the middle of the game (poin 5, 14, 23, 32, and 41) are 60 seconds long, and intervals between two minutes of games.
7. Walkover rules (WO): If the players withdraw in the middle of the game, the victory will be given to the opponent. Example: Team A won 18-0 in the second game, in the third game team A players withdrew, then points for team B became 18-27.
8. From the line-up line-up of the match, each team has the opportunity to replace one player in the middle of the match. The details of the substitution will be informed at the next opportunity.
9. The team manager who wins the coin toss can choose the party structure according to the BWF provisions.
Why Is This Point System Implemented?
This format was introduced by BWF to provide a new atmosphere as well as train the youth team's strategy in team events. This system is also considered more demanding cohesiveness and variation of strategies because it involves all sectors.
Another goal of using this format is so that junior players are able to adapt to a more dynamic match system.
In addition, every game that runs shorter will demand players try to avoid any minor mistakes that will automatically have a big impact on the final result.
The limited number of games that one player may play will also require more careful rotation. Then, a more structured interval provides an opportunity for the coach to conduct a brief evaluation in the middle of the match so that the strategy can be more flexible.
This latest format is part of a big strategy in developing junior team competitions. This format will make matches shorter, faster, and full of surprises.
Apart from that, in the 2025 Suhandinata Cup, Indonesia as a defender joined in Group C with Turkey, Romania, and the Netherlands. On paper, Indonesia should be able to get through the group stage.
