Ukrainian President Meets Trump Next Monday To Discuss Peace Details With Russia
JAKARTA - Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will visit Washington on Monday next week to meet US President Donald Trump.
The visit came after Trump spoke at length with the presidents of Ukraine and NATO and European leaders after the summit of the US president in Alaska, Russia's President Vladimir Putin.
The highly anticipated Trump-Putin summit resulted in no agreement to resolve or stop Russia's war in Ukraine, although the two leaders described the talks as productive before returning to their home countries.
Trump made a phone call with Zelenskyy and US allies on his way back to Washington, where he landed on Saturday, August 16 in the early hours of local time, the White House said.
Zelenskyy called the phone call more than 90 minutes long with Trump "long and substantive."
Zelenskyy said Ukraine supports Trump's proposal for a trilateral meeting between Ukraine, the US and Russia.
He also said he had discussed with Trump "positive signals from the Americans regarding participation in ensuring Ukraine's security."
"Ukraine emphasizes that key issues can be discussed at the leadership level, and the trilateral format is suitable for this. On Monday, I will meet with President Trump in Washington, DC, to discuss all details regarding the cessation of murder and war," Zelenskyy said on X.

Reporter Axios, Barak Ravid, citing sources, reported Trump telling Zelenskyy and European leaders during the phone call Putin was not interested in the ceasefire, but in a comprehensive deal to end the war.
"I think a fast peace deal is better than a ceasefire," Trump said in the call.
Reuters could not immediately verify the report.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, French President Emmanuel Macron, and leaders from Germany, Finland, Poland, Italy, and Britain joined the call, in which Trump briefed his allies on the summit with Putin.
