Towards Clean Energy: METI Encourages Sustainable Innovation And Policy

JAKARTA - The Indonesian government is committed to achieving the Net-Zero Emissions target, and the shift to renewable energy is very important for Indonesia because it is the key to achieving sustainable development and increasing national energy security.

This commitment also reflects Indonesia's active role in the issue of climate change and energy at the global level.

This was emphasized by the Presidential Special Envoy for Energy and Climate Change, Hashim Djojohadikusumo, conveying the importance of building a solid ecosystem so that clean energy can be accessed widely by the public.

He also emphasized that collaboration between parties is needed to realize the energy transition, especially in efforts to increase national electricity capacity and shift to green energy.

According to him, to achieve this, multi-stakeholder cooperation is needed, technological innovation, and policies that support sustainable growth.

One of the parties that plays an important role in encouraging the energy transition and promoting the use of renewable energy in Indonesia is the Indonesian Renewable Energy Society (METI).

As an organization that focuses on developing renewable energy, METI is committed to increasing energy security, expanding access to clean energy, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions for a greener and more sustainable future.

Ahead of the METI 20252028 management period, a number of figures from various backgrounds have expressed readiness to fill the position of the General Chair and the board, bringing the vision of an update and innovative strategies to accelerate the process of transitioning national energy.

One of the candidates for the METI General Chair for the 2025'2028 period is Norman Ginting, who currently serves as Director of Pertamina New & Renewable Energy (Pertamina NRE).

"METI is not only a forum for collaboration, but must be a concrete driving force and have a direct impact on national economic growth and support the government's asta program in encouraging the nation's independence, especially through a green economy," he said, quoted Thursday, August 14.

He also conveyed his vision to make Indonesia a center for renewable energy development in the Southeast Asia region.

To realize this, he continued, strengthening cross-sectoral collaboration is needed, encouraging technological innovation, and advocating policies that support sustainable growth.

Norman underlined a number of priority steps that need to be taken immediately to accelerate the energy transition, including accelerating the adoption of new and renewable energy through strategic projects such as solar power plants (solar PV), batteries, geothermal, biogas, biomass, hydropower, hydrogen, and wind.

In addition, he conveyed that the use of renewable energy outside the electricity sector also needs to be strengthened, such as the development of bioethanol, biodiesel, green ammonia, green hydrogen, and strengthening the carbon trading market.

"METI must be able to encourage policies and regulations by becoming an active partner of the government in creating a framework that supports investment and accelerates the implementation of the green economy," he concluded.
