Doctor Reveals Medical Reasons Behind Sudden Death While Running

JAKARTA - Running is indeed one of the most popular sports because it is easy to do and has many health benefits. However, not a few cases where someone suddenly dies while running or doing high-intensity exercise.

According to Dr. dr. Basuni Radi, Sp.JP(K), a heart and blood vessel specialist, there are several factors that can be the cause.

"Not only running, but other high-intensity physical activities or sports," said dr. Basuni, quoted from the Instagram account @pjn_harapankita on Saturday, August 9.

He explained, there are four main causes that can trigger sudden death when running.

"The first cause is that there is a congenital disorder in the form of an abnormal heart muscle. Second, it secretes abnormal heart rhythms," he said.

Despite the risks, dr. Basuni still emphasizes the importance of sports, with a note that there are things that need to be considered.

"In principle, you have to exercise. But there are several things that must be considered. One knows the symptoms, if you have complaints during your activities, there is tightness in your chest, palpitations, or feelings like you want to faint," he added.

He also reminded the importance of knowing personal risk factors.

"Second, if you have risk factors, diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, smoking, obesity and others," explained dr. Basuni.

dr. Basuni said that medical examinations before intensive exercise are important preventive measures.

"First, do an inspection, especially for those of you who are not used to sports. Second, you will do sports with high intensity. Third, it turns out that you have felt symptoms before," he explained.

Finally, he emphasized that medical examinations must be carried out if there are risk factors.

"There are four risk factors. Then do an inspection first, to ensure that the exercise you are doing will be useful and safe." he said.
