U.S. Autonomous Vehicle Advances, Regulators Approve Driverless, Steering And Pedal Cars

JAKARTA The autonomous vehicle industry in the United States (US) has just reached an important milestone in supporting its own country's technology industry. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has granted an exception to Zoox, Amazon's robotaxi company, which effectively approved its vehicle for the use of demonstrations even though it does not have a traditional steering wheel, pedal, or manual control.

This decision, reported Carscoops, Friday, August 8, became a major win for Zoox and marked a significant policy change for US-based autonomous vehicle companies (AVs). Previously, only foreign AV manufacturers were eligible for similar exceptions.

This exception is part of the "Agenda Innovation" initiated by Transport Minister Sean P.men, which aims to advance American-made technology and safety. In his statement, penjenis emphasized the importance of this move.

This is a mutually beneficial situation for safety and innovation. Under the leadership of President Trump, US companies such as Zoox now have a process of creating and testing their latest technology, said Marijuana.

"America is not China can and will push for the future of self-driving cars in the future," he added.

This approval follows a series of investigations by NHTSA into Zoox vehicles, including investigations in 2022 and the latest probes in May 2024 regarding two rear-and-back collision accidents and recalled vehicles related to braking issues.

While it is now permitted to carry out tests, Zoox is required to revise or remove previous claims stating that its vehicles have met Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. This approval paved the way for other US AV companies to get similar exceptions, accelerating the development and implementation of self-driving cars in the country.
