Bandung Zoo Permit Threatened To Be Revoked, Management Returns Giraffe, Lechwe, Gnu To Safari Park

The new management of the Indonesian Wildlife Foundation (YMT) has stated that it respects the steps taken by the Bandung City Government which plans to apply for the revocation of the Bandung Zoo (Bandung Zoo) conservation agency to the Ministry of Forestry.

"We respect any decision from the government on the management of the Bandung Zoo," said YMT's New Management Leader, John Sumampau in a press release received in Bandung, Antara, Thursday, August 7.

John said that one of the first steps that his party will take is to return a number of animals lent by Taman Safari since 2020. These animals include giraffes, lechwes, gnus (wildebests), as well as several animals used for performances or animal shows.

"There are still obligations related to the borrowing of animals that have not been completed by YMT," said John.

Responding to the Bandung Zoo temporary closure incident that occurred on Wednesday (6/8), John confirmed that the action was carried out solely to secure assets belonging to the Bandung City Government.

"Our basis for securing it is the Minutes of Evidence Collection from the West Java High Prosecutor's Office. We were ordered to protect the asset," he said.

He said the move was a follow-up to the meeting which took place on Monday, July 28, 2025, and was attended by representatives from the Bandung City Government, West Java Attorney General's Office, and the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK).

The meeting discussed securing Regional Property (BMD) in the form of land on Jalan Zoo Number 4-6, Bandung.

Despite being in the middle of a polemic, John ensured that the daily operations of the animals were still running. "When I closed the Bandung Zoo yesterday, I brought a keeper team to continue to carry out animal care such as feeding," he said.

However, he admitted that there were obstacles in technical implementation. "The animal feed shipment yesterday morning was unable to enter," he said.

For the incident, John apologized to the public, especially the visitors. He emphasized that the temporary closure was taken to maintain the safety of all parties and secure state assets.

“Ini semata-mata untuk memastikan keselamatan semua pihak, termasuk pengunjung, dan mengamankan aset pemerintah,” tuturnya.

"This is solely to ensure the safety of all parties, including visitors, and secure government assets," he said.
