Prabowo Wants RI-Malaysia Dispute Over Ambalat Not Harming Each Other

President Prabowo Subianto wants a peaceful settlement through good faith between the Government of Indonesia and Malaysia regarding the mention of the term Sulawesi Sea in the Ambalat region.

The President's statement relates to the mention of maritime territory in the 1979 Malaysia New Map, as the Sulawesi Sea, and not as a "refund", as a term used by Indonesia.

"Yes, we are looking for a good, peaceful solution, there is good faith from both parties. We should not, usually there is a possibility. The point is that we want a good solution," said President Prabowo when met after attending the 2025 Indonesian Science, Technology and Industry Convention (KSTI) at the Sasana Budaya Ganesa Building (Sabuga) ITB, Bandung, West Java, Thursday, confiscated by Antara.

President Prabowo said that basically the Indonesian government wants a good solution regarding the mention of the term "Laut Sulawesi" which was stated by the Malaysian Government.

As reported, the Malaysian Government calls maritime areas covering the ND6 and ND7 Blocks, located in the 1979 Malaysia New Map, as the Sulawesi Sea, and not as a "refund", just like the term used by Indonesia.

"The decision of the 2002 International Court (ICJ) on the sovereignty of the Sipadan Islands and Ligitan further strengthens the position of our maritime area in the Sulawesi Sea," said Malaysian Foreign Minister Dato' Mohamad Hasan.

The Malaysian Foreign Minister underlined that every terminology must be used properly and reflect the position of Malaysia's sovereignty and legal rights over the relevant territory.

In addition, the Foreign Minister stated that Malaysia remains committed to protecting its sovereignty, sovereign rights, and interests.

This, according to him, is in accordance with the 1982 United Nations Convention on Maritime Law (UNCLOS).

"And all discussions on this matter will be carried out through diplomatic, legal and technical mechanisms within the bilateral framework that has been established," said Malaysian Foreign Minister.
