3 Inmates In NTT Receive Amnesty From President Prabowo
A total of three correctional inmates (WBP) in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) were declared free after receiving amnesty from the President of the Republic of Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto.
Head of the Regional Office of the Directorate General of Corrections (Kanwil Ditjenpas) NTT, Ketut Akbar Herry Achjar, said that this release was carried out based on the Presidential Decree of the Republic of Indonesia Number 17 of 2025 dated August 1, 2025.
"Three inmates who accepted this policy came from the Waingapu Class IIA Prison as many as two people, and one person from the Class IIB Kupang Women's Prison," said Akbar Herry when confirmed in Kupang, Antara, Monday, August 4.
Two of the three inmates were released through an amnesty mechanism, while the other had previously been released through the conditional leave program (CB).
Akbar emphasized that the granting of this amnesty is a form of state presence in upholding restorative justice and upholding human values.
"The amnesty is not just a legal release, but also an opportunity for the inmates to improve their lives and return to society as a better person," he said.
The head of Waingapu Prison, Gidion Pally, explained that amnesty was given to two inmates through a proposal mechanism because both of them were classified as experiencing prolonged illness.
One of the recipients of the amnesty is Meliana Nau, who was sentenced to three years in prison and has chronic kidney failure so she has to undergo regular hemodialysis. Another is Yemis Pay, who is currently serving a five-year sentence and is currently being treated intensively at the Umbu Rara Meha Hospital, East Sumba due to a similar disease.
"This amnesty is not only a legal policy, but also a form of state concern for inmates who are struggling with very serious health conditions," said Gidion.
