BMKG Sorong: Sea Water Surface Is Normal, But Residents Must Stay Alert

SORONG - The Sorong Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) said the sea level in the Sorong City area did not show any significant changes until 17.33 WIT. However, residents are asked to remain alert to the tsunami, the impact of the Russian earthquake.

Head of Sorong Geophysics Station, Dedi Irjayanto, said that based on the results of monitoring of the tides, the condition of the city's waters was still normal.

"There has been no significant change from the sea level," he said as quoted by ANTARA, Wednesday, July 30.

In addition to Sorong, BMKG also monitors sea level in the Jayapura and Sarmi areas, which show an increase of about 0.15 meters.

However, he emphasized that there was no significant change in Sorong City.

Monitoring was carried out from 16.24 to 17.34 WIT at Reclamation Beach by involving BMKG together with related agencies from the Provincial Government of Southwest Papua, Sorong City Government, the police, and Basarnas Sorong.

Although the situation is still under control, the public is advised to remain vigilant and not panic, while waiting for an official decision from the center regarding the revocation of alert status.

Head of the Fire, Rescue, Disaster Management, and Southwest Papua Civil Service Police Unit Vincente Capana Baay emphasized that the local provincial government will continue to carry out calls sourced from the BMKG.

"We still urge the public to stay away from the shoreline for one kilometer," he said.

The local government together with other related parties continue to monitor the development of the situation intensively to ensure public safety is maintained.
