Sixth-Grade Student Unleashing Shots At School, Two Students And Staff Wounded

JAKARTA - A sixth-grade girl pulled a gun from her bag and opened fire at her school, which is located in eastern Idaho, United States, Thursday, May 6 local time.

As a result, two students and a school staff member were shot and injured, although not threatening the lives of the three.

The girl was stripped by a teacher at Rigby Middle School in Rigby, Idaho, which is about 270 miles (435 km) east of Boise, and held until law enforcement arrived, Jefferson County Sheriff Steve Anderson said.

"She fired a lot of bullets inside and outside the school. We don't have a lot of details about why. That is being investigated", Anderson said at a news conference.

Meanwhile, School District Superintendent Jefferson Chad Martin said the students were sent home with their parents immediately after the shooting. And, the school will be closed this Friday.

"This is the worst nightmare any school district has ever faced. We prepared for it and we were never really ready for it", said Martin.

Several law enforcement agencies were involved in the investigation into the shooting, which occurred shortly after 9 am local time, said Anderson County Sheriff Jefferson. Local media previously reported that a male student was detained following the shooting.

Separately, Attorney Jefferson County Mark Taylor said the charges against the girl could include three counts of attempted murder, depending on the outcome of the investigation.

"None of the gunshot wounds are life-threatening. They could be much worse", Lemon said. "We feel truly blessed", said Michael Lemon, Trauma Director at Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center.

"The school staff member was treated and allowed to go home. Meanwhile, the two students who were victims were hospitalized for observation", he added.

Likewise, Idaho Governor Brad Little issued a brief statement shortly after the incident.

"Thanks to our law enforcement agencies and school leaders for their efforts in responding to the incident. I will keep you updated on the situation", Little said on Twitter.
