Collaborating With TotalEnergies, Petronas Wants To Drill Explore Wells At WK Bobara Next Year

JAKARTA - Petronas and TotalEnergies plan to drill the exploration well of the Bobara Regional (WK) by 2026.

Previously, TotalEnergies had acquired 24.5 percent of participating interest (PI) or Petronas participation rights in the WK located in West Papua.

Head of the Special Task Force for Upstream Oil and Gas Business Activities (SKK Migas), Djoko Siswanto, said that actually the consortium of the two companies had signed a definite commitment to conducting seismic tests at WK Bobara.

But on its way, TotalEnergies and Petronas are confident in the results of the seismic test and want to drill exploration wells.

"He is actually committed to seismicity, but because he is optimistic about the seismic results he wants to drill immediately. Patent, right?" Djoko said to the media crew, quoted on Thursday, July 24.

Previously, TotalEnergies acquired 24.5 percent of participating interest (PI) or Petronas participation rights in the Bobara Oil and Gas (Migas) Working Area (WK), West Papua.

Quoted from Antara, the acquisition of PI TotalEnergies from Petronas was marked by the signing of a Farm Out Agreement (FOA) between Petronas and TotalEnergies, which took place at the Energy Asia 2025 event in Kuala Lumpur.

Petronas will later remain an operator at WK Bobara through its subsidiary, Petronas Energy Bobara Sdn Bhd. Meanwhile, TotalEnergies, with global technical expertise and experience, will strengthen the execution of the block exploration and development program.

WK Bobara with an area of 8,444.49 km2, has a potential for oil and gas resources of 6.8 Billion Barrel Oil Equivalent (BBOE).

The Bobara WK Result Sharing Contract is an Exploration WK with a period of 30 years signed in May 2024, with a definite commitment of 16.92 million US dollars, consisting of 3 Geological and Geophysics studies (G&G) and a seismic resolution survey of 2,000 km2, as well as a signature bonus of 50 thousand US dollars.
