Apple Secretly Adds Video Screening Feature On CarPlay On IOS 26

JAKARTA - Apple is now presenting a video playback feature on CarPlay via iOS 26 update, although this feature was not officially announced at the WWDC 2025 event. Information about this feature was found only in short notes on Apple's developer website.

With iOS 26, users can stream videos from iPhone to CarPlay screen, but only when the vehicle is in a parking condition. The connection to this video playback uses AirPlay and will automatically stop if the device detects the vehicle starting to move.

This feature, called "Video in the car", requires car manufacturers to support video playback via AirPlay in the vehicle infotainment system. However, Apple has not confirmed whether this feature will be compatible with existing vehicles or only available for new models. In addition, it is not clear whether this feature is related to the next-generation CarPlay version that offers more integrated control.

Regulation Limits and Hardware

Users will not be able to enjoy video playback if the car's infotainment system does not support this feature, even though it already uses iOS 26. Car manufacturers must activate this support, and security regulations in various countries can also limit their availability.

Some countries may ban or limit live video playback on vehicle dashboard screens, regardless of Apple's software capabilities. Apple also hasn't shown a video interface display or announced any video apps and formats that will be supported.

This is Apple's first time officially supporting video playback in a car via CarPlay. Previously, users had to use a third-party jailbreak or app to enjoy similar features. With iOS 26, video playback is an official part of the CarPlay experience.

This feature also brings Apple closer to the competitive steps that have already brought it. For example, Tesla's Theater app allows streaming Netflix, YouTube, and others when the car is parked. BMW, Mercedes, and several other manufacturers also offer similar features on their car systems.

Especially for electric vehicles, this feature is very relevant because drivers often spend 20 to 40 minutes charging. Entertainment in the car during battery charging provides added value to the infotainment screen.

Apple seems to see this area as an opportunity to improve its CarPlay function going forward.
