China Comments On The Indonesia-United States Trade Agreement

JAKARTA - The Chinese government delivered a statement regarding the trade tariff agreement reached between Indonesia and the United States.

"Our stance always emphasizes that parties need to resolve economic and trade disputes through equal dialogue and consultation," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian said at a press conference in Beijing, Wednesday, July 16.

Indonesia and the United States reached an agreement regarding the trade rates between the two countries and the US imposed a 19 percent tariff on Indonesian products entering the US, while Indonesia completely waived tariffs on US products entering Indonesia.

Previously, the US imposed a 32 percent tariff on Indonesian products as US President Donald Trump's letter dated July 7, 2025 to President Prabowo Subianto. The new tariff value was achieved after the conversation between President Prabowo and Donald Trump.

"China hopes that countries can jointly build a conducive environment for economic cooperation and international trade," added Lin Jian.

In his social media account Trump Social, Donald Trump said that if there are products from third countries with higher rates that will be exported to the US through Indonesia, the 19 percent tariff will be added to the product. In addition to setting tariff values, the agreement also includes Indonesia's commitment to buy energy from the US for 15 billion US dollars and agricultural products worth 4.5 billion US dollars.

Trump also mentioned that Indonesia's commitment to buy 50 new Boeing aircraft, most of which are Boeing 777. However, it did not specify which airline or party would buy the plane.

"This important agreement opens all Indonesian MARKETs to the United States for the first time in history," Trump said, expressing his gratitude to the Indonesian people for "friendly and commitment to balancing the US trade deficit towards Indonesia".

As for China-US trade rates, the interim agreement was that China lowered tariffs on US export goods from 125 percent to 10 percent while the US lowered tariffs on Chinese products from 145 percent to 30 percent.

The 30 percent set is a combination of a 10 percent base rate and an additional 20 percent tariff as a "sanks" for China accused of involvement in illegal fentanyl trading.

However, the reciprocal tariff previously set by the US was not permanently removed, but was suspended for 90 days until August 12, 2025.
