Singapore Superior In AI Development, Indonesia Asked To Be More Open To Collaboration

JAKARTA - Currently, all countries in any part of the world are busy making regulations related to the development and use of artificial intelligence (AI) technology which is increasingly massive from time to time.

However, particularly in Southeast Asia, the Expert Staff for Socio-Economic and Cultural Affairs of the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs, Wijaya Kusumawardhana said that Singapore is one of the more advanced countries in AI development.

According to him, Singapore's advantage lies not only in its technological readiness, but also in the systemic foundations they have been building for a long time.

"Singapore is indeed the first naturally, their system has been built for a long time. The manufacturing system is built, the digital system is built," he said at the Ngopi Bareng Komdigi event on Friday, July 11.

Wijaya explained that personally, he had conducted a brief study of the export performance of information and communication technology (ICT) between Indonesia and Singapore from 2010 to 2021.

The results show a downward trend in Indonesia's ICT export contribution from around 11 percent to only about 4'5 percent. On the other hand, Singapore has actually increased over time.

"Maybe because they are also integrated, it means that apart from small countries and they can take advantage of research-research from outside, and collaboration is very high," he added.

He also said that Indonesia needed to learn from Singapore's collaborative approach. "We must have the courage to open ourselves up and become more open-minded to be able to collaborate with many parties," he said.
