BMKG: Beware Of Extreme Weather, Rain And Lightning Forecasted By A Number Of Cities In Indonesia

JAKARTA The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) predicts that the majority of major cities in Indonesia will experience cloudy weather, light rain, and rain accompanied by lightning on Tuesday (adjusted dates), along with the potential for extreme weather that is still lurking in a number of areas.

BMKG forecaster Indah Fitrianti explained that light rain with an intensity below 2.5 mm per hour has the potential to occur in several cities, including Padang, Pekanbaru, Tanjung Pinang, Bengkulu, Palembang, Serang, Mamuju, Palu, Kendari, Ambon, Sorong, Ternate, Manokwari, and Jayawijaya.

Meanwhile, rain with intensity is predicted to fall in Medan, Nabire, Jayapura, and Merauke. The cities of Tanjung Selor and Gorontalo are expected to experience heavy rain accompanied by lightning with rainfall of more than 5.0 mm per hour.

A number of big cities such as Banda Aceh, Jakarta, Bandung, Semarang, Yogyakarta, Surabaya, Mataram, Denpasar, Kupang, Banjarmasin, Palangkaraya, Samarinda, Manado, and Makassar are expected to experience thick or foggy cloudy weather throughout the day. The air temperature in these areas ranges from 25 to 30 degrees Celsius.

Indah explained that the weather conditions were influenced by a number of atmospheric dynamics that were taking place, including the transition period from the rainy season to the dry season and the factors.

The BMKG detected a slowdown in wind speed in a number of areas such as northern Java, West Java, Seram Sea, southwest Indian Ocean Java, Andaman Sea, Flores Sea, and the Pacific Ocean of Papua.

In addition, atmospheric waves such as Kelvin Waves have been observed to be active in the East Nusa Tenggara region and most of Papua, while Equatorial Rossby Waves have been detected from Aceh, Riau, North Sumatra, to North Kalimantan.

"The dynamics of this atmosphere in addition to being able to increase the growth of the rainy cloud, also causes the acceleration of the surface wind of more than 25 knots, as well as high sea waves between 2.5 to 4 meters, especially in the southern waters of Banten to Nusa Tenggara," explained Indah.

BMKG urges the public to remain alert to potential extreme weather such as heavy rain, strong winds, lightning, and high waves in the waters. Especially for coastal communities and sea transportation users, to pay attention to early warnings from the BMKG before their activities.
