Cause 101 Deaths In 2025, Check Out A Series Of Facts About Leptospirosis

JAKARTA - The Indonesian Ministry of Health revealed 101 deaths from 787 leptospirosis cases in Indonesia from January to June 6, 2025. With this incident, the Ministry of Health again reminded the public about the dangers of leptospirosis.

Please note that leptospirosis is a disease caused by leptospira bacteria. These bacteria can spread through the urine or blood of infected animals.

Some animals classified as intermediaries for the spread of leptospirosis are rats, cows, dogs, and pigs. Quoted from the official website of the Indonesian Ministry of Health, the spread of bacteria from these animals is usually in puddles of water, such as floods, ditches, to mud.

Transmission to humans can occur due to the following:

- Direct contact between the skin and the urine of bacteria-carrying animals. - Contact between skin and water and soil contaminated with urine of bacteria-carrying animals. - Consumption of food or drinks contaminated with urine of bacteria-carrying animals.

Leptospira bacteria can enter the body through open wounds, both small wounds such as abrasions, large wounds. These bacteria can also enter through the eyes, nose, mouth, and digestive tract.

Symptoms Of Leptospirosis

Symptoms of leptospirosis vary widely from each patient and are similar to several other diseases. Some of the early symptoms and signs that arise in leptospirosis sufferers include the following.

- High fever and chills - Headaches - Nausea, vomiting, no appetite - calf-red eye muscle pain - Yellowness on the skin

If you have experienced these symptoms, especially after doing activities in dirty water, immediately go to the hospital. Handling leptospirosis must be done quickly, to prevent the patient's condition from getting worse.

Prevention Of Infected Leptospirosis

With the risk of leptospirosis which can cause death, prevention should be carried out so as not to be infected. The Ministry of Health recommends several actions to prevent leptospirative infection.

This action is to use gloves and sepati boots when cleaning the house and bed. Then wash hands and body with soap after activities, especially if activities are carried out in very dirty areas.
