Successfully Adding 30,000 Barrels, ExxonMobil Drills 7 New Wells With Pertamina's Rigs

JAKARTA - ExxonMobil as the operator of Banyu Urip Field, Block Cepu, East Java managed to record an additional 30,000 barrels of oil lifting per day. Just so you know, previously the Banyu Urip Field managed to produce 150,000 bopd, but with this addition it managed to reach 180,000 barrels per day.

Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Bahlil Lahadalia explained that an additional 30,000 barrels per day in the Cepu Block is the President's direct direction to support the energy self-sufficiency target.

"For energy matters, we must be self-sufficient in energy and our target is 900,000 to 1,000,000 barrels per day in 2029-2030," said Bahlil, quoted on Friday, June 27.

He explained that the oil and gas production increase program began in 2024 with a target completion in 2026. Thanks to the synergy between the government, SKK Migas, ExxonMobil, and Pertamina, the drilling of seven wells was completed in the first semester of 2025 or 10 months earlier than the original schedule.

"This project is only 8 months ahead and 10 months ahead of the plan and we have been doing this since the President was sworn in for 6 days and we came to Cepu and thank God ExxonMobil is working with Pertamina to increase 30,000 barrels," said Bahlil.

Prior to the addition, Banyu Urip Field produced 150,000 barrels per day. Now, the figure has risen to 180,000 barrels or equivalent to 25 percent of national oil lifting. The Banyu Urip Infill Classic (BUIC) project includes drilling four new production wells, carried out by PT Pertamina Drilling Services Indonesia using state-made advanced rigs.

The total investment in the Cepu Block reaches 4 billion US dollars and has contributed 30 billion US dollars to state revenues, as well as increased Regional Original Revenue (PAD) in Bojonegoro and Cepu with 99 percent of the workforce coming from within the country.

Head of the Special Oil and Gas Work Unit (SKK Migas) Djoko Siswanto also appreciated the strong collaboration of all parties who accelerated this project.

"We appreciate ExxonMobil Cepu Limited for its success in completing this project faster than scheduled, as well as for its close coordination with the government. This success reflects the increasing capability of Indonesia's upstream oil and gas and our joint commitment to increasing production to meet national energy needs and strengthening long-term energy security," said Djoko.

President of ExxonMobil Indonesia, Wade Floyd, emphasized the importance of synergy between ExxonMobil, Pertamina, and the government.

"We are proud to be able to support Indonesia's energy targets through the BUIC drilling project, which reflects a shared commitment to safety, innovation and operational excellence," said Wade Floyd.
