Through A Letter, Khamenei Asks Putin For Help After The US Attack

JAKARTA - Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei sent his foreign minister to Moscow to ask President Vladimir Putin to provide more assistance from Russia after the largest US military action against Iran on weekends.

US President Donald Trump and Israel have publicly speculated on the assassination of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and about regime changes, a move Russia fears it could sink the Middle East into a ravine.

While Putin condemned the Israeli attack, he has not commented on the US attack on Iran's nuclear site although last week he offered Moscow services as a mediator for the nuclear program.

Senior sources told Reuters Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi would submit a letter from Khamenei to Putin asking for his support.

Iran wants Putin to do more to support him against Israel and the United States.

The source did not elaborate on what assistance Tehran wanted.

The Kremlin said Putin would accept Araghchi but did not say what would be discussed.

Araghchi was quoted by the TASS state news agency as saying Iran and Russia were coordinating their positions regarding the latest escalation in the Middle East.

Putin has repeatedly offered to mediate between the United States and Iran, and said he has conveyed Moscow's idea of resolving the conflict to them while ensuring Iran's continued access to civilian nuclear energy.

The Kremlin leadership last week declined to discuss the possibility that Israel and the United States would kill Khamenei.
