USS Nimitz' Carrier Crossing The Malacca Strait Uses Transit Rights
Head of the Information Center (Kapuspen) TNI Headquarters Major General Kristomei Sianturi said the United States aircraft carrier USS Nimitz was allowed to pass through the Malacca Strait because it uses transit rights.
"In accordance with the provisions in the 1982 International Marine Law Convention (UNCLOS), foreign ships, including warships, are allowed to pass without having to ask for permission from the coastal state," said Major General TNI Kristomei in an official press release from the TNI Headquarters received in Jakarta, Friday.
According to him, the public does not need to worry about the presence of the US aircraft carrier.
Maj. Gen. Kristomei emphasized that his party will continue to monitor the movement of the ship so as not to interfere with community activities and threaten the country's sovereignty.
"Foreign ships, including warships, are allowed to pass without having to ask for permission from the coastal state, as long as they continue to comply with international shipping regulations and do not endanger the security of the area being crossed," explained the Head of the TNI Headquarters.
