Attorney General For Ultimatum: Prosecutors In Weak Areas Handling Corruption Ready To Be Removed

TERNATE - Attorney General ST Burhanuddin gave a firm warning to all his staff at the provincial, district and city levels to be serious in handling corruption cases.

During his working visit to the North Maluku High Prosecutor's Office (Kejati), Wednesday, June 18, Burhanuddin emphasized that he would not tolerate low performance, especially regarding the handling of corruption cases.

"I will evaluate the performance of each region. If the handling of corruption cases is minimal or not, get ready to be removed," said ST Burhanuddin in front of the media crew.

In an internal meeting with the North Maluku Prosecutor's Office, ST Burhanuddin said that the prosecutor's performance in the regions must be at the forefront of eradicating corruption. He asked the prosecutors to show real performance to the public as a form of responsibility for law enforcement institutions.

"We have to take care of the prosecutor's office. The public demands justice and concrete actions. There should be no impression that the prosecutor's office is weak towards corruptors," he said.

Even though the North Maluku Prosecutor's Office has handled six corruption cases, ST Burhanuddin assesses that this number still needs to be increased, especially with the growing level of public trust.

The strong warning does not only apply to the North Maluku Prosecutor's Office, but also to all prosecutors in Indonesia. The Attorney General emphasized the importance of saving state money and measuring the success of law enforcement from the number of cases handled and the value of state losses that could be saved.

"In the regions, the budget may be small, but that doesn't mean we can handle corruption weakly. We have to work optimally, don't take it lightly," he said.

Attorney General ST Burhanuddin's visit to the North Maluku Prosecutor's Office was also marked by demonstrations from a number of anti-corruption activists. They voiced criticism of the weak law enforcement of corruption cases in North Maluku.

The action had heated up because the demonstrators used loudspeakers that allegedly disturbed the meeting. However, the situation was successfully controlled by the prosecutor's security forces.

"They did not have an official permit for the demonstration. Only a handful and took place briefly. We make sure it doesn't interfere with the main activities," said Head of the Legal Information Section (Kasipenkum) of the North Maluku Attorney General's Office, Richard Sinaga.
