Reluctant To Use Military Barracks, Rano Karno Asks Ulama To Build People Who Like Brawls
JAKARTA - Deputy Governor of DKI Jakarta Rano Karno assessed that brawls in Jakarta were still a problem that needed to be handled optimally. Collective efforts are needed to eradicate brawls.
Instead of sending the citizens of the brawlers to the military barracks for guidance, Rano said that the DKI Provincial Government chose to prioritize the role of ulama, religious leaders, and community leaders.
The figures were asked by Rano to help foster the community to stay away from acts of violence such as brawls between groups of residents.
"The brawl in Jakarta is very concerning. The DKI Jakarta Provincial Government together with the TNI, Polri, as well as scholars and community leaders must work hand in hand to resolve this issue," said Rano at the Regional Working Conference (Mukerda) II of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) DKI Jakarta Province, Wednesday, June 18.
Community organizations such as MUI, according to Rano, are government partners who can play a role in building a religious, noble, and intelligent society spiritually and socially.
"Jakarta is currently undergoing a transformation towards an inclusive and competitive global city. In this process, physical development must be balanced with the development of the character of residents who are harmonious, tolerant, and nationally friendly," explained Rano.
On that occasion, Rano revealed that the DKI Provincial Government will continue to strengthen collaboration with MUI and harmonize community development programs.
"We hope that this deliberation will become a space for friendship, reflection, as well as formulation of strategic steps in the future. Hopefully, fresh ideas will be born from this forum that strengthen the role of MUI and make a real contribution to Jakarta," he explained.

Previously, the Gerindra Party faction of the DKI Jakarta DPRD proposed that the Governor of DKI Jakarta use the youth development budget which is usually allocated to youth organizations programs to be used to send problematic youths to military barracks to be fostered.
The proposal was expressed by a member of the Gerindra faction of the DKI Jakarta DPRD, Ryan Kurnia Ar Rahman, in the general view of the faction of the Draft Regional Regulation on Accountability for the Implementation of the 2024 APBD.
"Cooperation with military barracks for fostering young people needs to be considered, of course, after training, it needs to be supported by the budget so that they can carry out positive activities," said Ryan.
A similar activity has been carried out by the Governor of West Java, Dedi Mulyadi, who is also a politician from the Gerindra Party. The policy of fostering troubled youths in the military barracks initiated by Dedi Mulyadi has so far caused pros and cons.
However, Gerindra assessed that military development could be more effective in fostering youth than existing activities.
"The budget for youth coaching, youth organizations, according to the Gerindra Party faction, is too small to have an impact on DKI Jakarta youth preferring to be busy fighting to take lives rather than positive activities due to a lack of budget support," Ryan explained.
