Zelenskyy Wants To Meet Trump At Canada's G7 Summit, Asks Russia For Sanctions To Inject Ukrainian Aid

JAKARTA - Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy plans to attend the G7 summit summit in Canada next week. Zelensky hopes to meet US President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the meeting.

The Ukrainian president plans to discuss ongoing support for Ukraine, sanctions against Russia, and future financing for Kyiv reconstruction efforts during the upcoming summit.

"However, the final decision rests with the White House, depending on the President of the United States," Zelenskyy said of the possible application of harsh sanctions against Russia.

"I hope we will discuss (with Trump) at the G7 summit and I hope that if no decision was made before that, I will be able to at least understand how close we are to that decision."

Trump last week said he had not yet decided whether to impose sanctions on Russia under consideration by the US Senate.

Zelenskiy said at a joint press conference with German defense minister Boris Pistorius that Kyiv could not possibly provide compensation for the US weapons system if the shipment was stopped.

Zelenskyy also said Ukraine intends to expand cooperation with Germany in joint weapons production.

"We need funding. Germany is one of the countries that understands it and knows its rules and always does what they say," Zelenskyy said.

Pistorius said on Thursday his country's military support for Ukraine had reached 7 billion euros ($8.12 billion) this year and another 1.9 billion euros were still awaiting parliamentary approval.
