Banda Aceh Residents Hand Over Japanese Grenades To Police

BANDA ACEH - A resident of Gampong Ateuk Pahlawan, Baiturrahman District, Banda Aceh City, Heri Wijaya (42) handed over an object suspected of being a Japanese-made type 97 grenade to the Banda Aceh Police.

"The object suspected of being a grenade has been disposal at the foot of Mount Peukan Bada Aceh Besar," said Head of Criminal Investigation Unit of the Banda Aceh Police, Iptu Herri, as reported by ANTARA, Monday, June 9.

The dangerous explosives were found by residents when they were about to fish in the Gampong Deah Baro area, Meuraxa District, Banda Aceh City. After that, they were immediately handed over to the SPKT Polresta Banda Aceh.

"After that, we coordinated with Jihandak Gegana Sat Brimob Aceh Region to carry out research related to this object," he said.

After observations, and it was declared dangerous, he said, this morning a disposal was immediately carried out or detonated using a special tool belonging to the Subden Jibom Den Gegana Satbrimob Polda Aceh.

"The explosion was carried out in a safe place and far from community settlements, namely the site of the former excavation C in Peukan District, Aceh Besar District," he said.

Based on information from the Jibom Team Den Gegana Polda Aceh, the object is a Japanese state-made type 97 hand grenade.

The hand grenades are thought to be Japanese military relics. The grenade is standard equipment for Japanese Marine infantry forces during the second Sino-Japan war in the second world war. The grenade began development in 1937.
