Stomach Soars When Menstruation? This Is A Medical Explanation And How To Overcome It

JAKARTA - Stomach feels bloating during menstruation is a common complaint experienced by many women. This condition often makes it uncomfortable and can interfere with daily activities.

Apparently, this problem is not solely due to a diet, but is closely related to hormonal changes in the body during menstruation cycles.

According to Dr. Manjusha Goel, the main consultant from the Department of Midwives and Gynecology at CK Birla Hospital, Delhi, India, symptoms such as bloating, constipation, and even menstruation are the body's response to natural hormone fluctuations that occur during menstruation.

"Estrogen and progesterone are the two main hormones that have experienced significant changes. Towards the arrival of the moon, the levels of the two hormones have decreased drastically. This decline not only causes contraction in the uterus, but also affects the movement of the intestines," he explained as quoted by the Hindustan Times, as quoted by ANTARA.

He added that the increased progesteron before menstruation could slow down the digestive process, causing bloating stomach and constipation. Meanwhile, a chemical called prostaglandin that the body releases during menstruation also plays a role in triggering intestinal contraction, causing bowel movements more often or diarrhea.

In addition, hormonal changes can also cause fluid and sodium retention in the body, so that the stomach feels more full or swells. In fact, the balance of bacteria in the intestines also changes during the menstrual cycle, which also affects gas production and discomfort in the stomach.

The desire to eat sweet and fatty foods also increased during the pre-menstruation period. Overconsumption of sugar and fat high snacks can worsen the condition of the bloating stomach.

To help relieve this symptom, women are advised to maintain a healthy diet during menstruation. Consuming high-fiber foods such as fruit, vegetables, and seeds can help prevent constipation and reduce bloating.

Keeping the body hydrated is also very important. In addition, drinking herbal tea such as ginger or peppermint can help relieve cramps and support digestive function.

Mild physical activity, such as walking or stretching, can also help increase intestinal movement and reduce discomfort in the stomach during menstruation.
