Indonesia Asks Permanent Members Of UN DK To Fulfill Moral And Political Responsibility To Stop Israel's Violations
JAKARTA - Indonesia has asked permanent members of the UN Security Council to fulfill its moral and political responsibilities to stop Israeli violence, as the agency again failed to agree on a resolution to the ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.
The United States vetoed a draft UN Security Council resolution urging a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip at a meeting at the United Nations Headquarters, New York, United States on Wednesday local time, as the death toll in the Palestinian enclave continued to grow.
The draft resolution demands an immediate, unconditional and permanent ceasefire between Israel and the Hamas militant group in the Gaza Strip, Palestine; unrestricted access to aid distribution in the enclave; as well as the release of all remaining hostages.
In the draft resolution vote, all members were non-permanent and four of the council's five permanent members supported the resolution. Only the United States, which is also a permanent member of the council, used veto rights to stem the resolution.
"Indonesia regrets the failure of the UN Security Council in passing a draft resolution calling for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza and the smooth distribution of humanitarian aid," the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs wrote in a post on social media X, Thursday, June 5.

"Indonesia emphasizes the importance of joint action with the international community to enforce international Humanitarian Law and protect the civilian people, especially women and children in Gaza," the upload continued.
"Indonesia calls on the international community, especially permanent members of the UN DK to fulfill its moral and political responsibilities to stop violations that Israel continues to commit in realizing a just and sustainable peace in Gaza and the entire Palestinian Population Area," wrote the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The latest draft resolution submitted by all members of the council, Algeria, Denmark, Greece, Guyana, Pakistan, Panama, South Korea, Sierra Leone, Slovenia, and Somalia.
Together with China, France, Russia, and Britain, all proposed resolutions provided support in the vote at the United Nations Headquarters, New York, United States on Wednesday local time.
Meanwhile, US Ambassador to the United Nations Dorothy Shea described the draft resolution as "unacceptable".
"The US opposition to this resolution should not be surprising, unacceptable because what it says is unacceptable for what it doesn't say, and unacceptable for how it delivers it," Shea said, quoted by UN News.
"The United States has made it clear," he continued, "we will not support any actions that fail to condemn Hamas and do not call on Hamas to lay off arms and leave Gaza."
Last November, the US also vetoed a UN DK resolution draft urging a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. Like this draft resolution, the draft resolution at that time was also proposed by all members of the council. That is the fifth time the US has blocked a resolution calling for a Gaza ceasefire since the start of the escalation in October 2023, quoted from TASS.
It is known that the UN DK resolution voting mechanism requires at least nine votes to support, out of a total of 15 council members, without veto from one of the permanent members of the council consisting of the United States, Britain, China, Russia, and France.
The latest conflict in Gaza broke out on October 7, after a Palestinian militant group led by Hamas attacked the southern region of Israel, leaving 1,200 people dead and another 251 held hostage according to Israeli calculations.
Israel responded to this by blocking, airstrikes, and carrying out military operations in the Gaza Strip region.

On January 19, the two countries imposed a ceasefire agreement and exchanged hostages, following a deal reached days earlier between Hamas and Israel through Egyptian, Qatar and US intermediaries.
Israel again carried out a total blockade of all aid on March 2, saying it was carried out to pressure the Hamas group to accept the ceasefire's proposal and release all hostages in the Gaza Strip.
Separately, health sources in Gaza on Wednesday confirmed that the death toll of Palestinians in Gaza since the latest conflict broke out has reached 54,607 people, the majority of children and women, while injured as of 125,341 people, quoted from WAFA.
