China Accuses US Of Disrupting Geneva Consensus

JAKARTA - The Chinese government said the United States deliberately disrupted the Geneva consensus which aims to overcome trade wars between the two countries.

"The US has mistakenly accused China of violating the Geneva consensus, and has instead issued an extreme, detrimental action against China, which seriously disrupted the Geneva consensus and harmed China's legitimate rights and interests," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian told a news conference in Beijing on Tuesday, June 3.

The actions taken by the US, according to Lin Jian, were to issue guidance on export control of artificial intelligence (AI), stop selling "Electronic Design Automation" (EDA) or software used to design and create "chips" to China and announce visa lifting for Chinese students.

"The Geneva consensus was achieved in line with the principles of mutual respect and equal consultation. China has carried out the consensus responsibly and faithfully," said Lin Jian.

Lin Jian emphasized that pressure and coercion are not the right way to be applied to China.

"We call on the US to respect the facts, stop spreading disinformation, correct mistakes and act to uphold the Geneva consensus," said Lin Jian.

Lin Jian also declined to comment on information from the White House stating that he would make a phone call with President Xi Jinping this week.

Earlier on Friday (30/5), US President Donald J. Trump on his social media "Truth Social" said two weeks ago, China was in serious economic danger! The very high rate from the US makes it nearly impossible for China to trade in the US market which is so far the number one in the world.

"We, basically, stopped the relationship in TOTAL with China, and it was devastating for them. Many factories were closed and happened, to say it smoothly, 'civil riots'. I saw what happened and didn't like it, for them, not for," Trump said.

Trump said he made a "FAST DEAL" with China to save China from what he thought would be a very bad situation, and Trump didn't want to see that happen.

"Thanks to this deal, everything has stabilized quickly and China is back in business as usual. Everyone is happy! That's the good news!!! The bad news is China, maybe not surprising to some people, has REALLY VIOLATED HIS AGREEMENT WITH US. So, just like that to be a GOOD TUAN!" Trump said.

China and the US reached an agreement to defuse the tariff war on May 11, 2025 in Genewa, Switzerland.

The deal said the US cut the "return" rate on Chinese goods to 10 percent but still maintains an additional 20 percent rate so Beijing can act more to suppress fentanyl's illegal trade.

This means that the US reduced the tariff on goods from China from 245 percent to "only" 30 percent. The US also said higher import rates were suspended for 90 days, not permanently removed.

Meanwhile, China has also reduced the retaliatory import rate imposed in response to import rates from the US to 10 percent, which was suspended again for three months.

This means that China has lowered the tariff on US products from 125 percent to 10 percent. China also agreed to "accept or remove" all non-tariff actions against the US including special tariffs even though tariffs for goods such as steel and cars remain in effect.
