One In Four Women Potentially Natural Hemorrhagic Menstruation
JAKARTA During pregnancy, women are prone to various health problems that can affect physical and emotional conditions.
Therefore, it is also important to pay attention to health problems that arise before pregnancy, one of which is heavy menstrual bleeding which can have a serious impact on the quality of life and fertility.
Obstetric Specialist and Gynecology Consultant of Reproduction Fertility from FKUI-RSCM, dr. Achmad Kemal Harzif, Sp.OG (K)-FER, revealed that about one in four women of fertile age are at risk of Weight Menstruation (PMB), which in medical terms is known as Heavy Menstructural Bleeding (HMB).
"Under normal conditions, the total volume of menstrual blood should only be around 80 cc for five to seven days. If it lasts more than eight days or the amount of blood is excessive, it can be categorized as abnormal bleeding," explained dr. Kemal when met in Jakarta, as quoted by ANTARA.
PMB is defined as a condition of menstruation characterized by excessive bleeding to interfere with physical activity, emotional balance, and even women's economic condition. Symptoms can include frequent changing sanitary napkins or sanitary napkins every one to two hours because they fill up quickly, bleeding for more than seven days, the appearance of large blood clots, and severe pain in the lower part of the stomach during menstruation.
Although this condition is relatively common, about 47 percent of women still consider it a normal part of the menstrual cycle, so they do not seek medical treatment. In fact, 39 percent of women do not know that PMB can be treated, according to data presented by dr. Kemal.

The impact of PMB cannot be underestimated. One of the long-term effects that often occurs is anemia due to iron deficiency, which can cause the body to easily tire, appear pale, to trigger shortness of breath. This condition can also increase the risk of heart disease and reduce productivity because patients have difficulty carrying out their daily activities.
"sleeping obstacles, repeated pain, mental stress, and the high burden of medical expenses due to additional medical procedures make women lose their overall quality of life," added dr. Kemal.
For this reason, early detection is very important so that women get the right treatment. The good news is that PMB treatment is available and can be adjusted to the conditions and needs of patients.
For women who are planning pregnancy, doctors can prescribe non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID) and transexamic acid to help reduce bleeding.
Meanwhile, for those who are not undergoing a pregnancy program, one of the therapeutic options that can be used is the Levonorgestrel-Releasing Intrauterine System (LNG-IUS) a small T-letter-shaped device installed in the uterus and releasing hormones slowly.
This tool serves to prevent thickening the uterine wall and can significantly reduce the volume of bleeding during menstruation.
