Tokyo University Ready To Accommodate Foreign Students From Harvard After Trump's Ban
JAKARTA - The University of Tokyo is considering the possibility of accepting international students from Harvard University in the United States for a while.
The move came after the US government issued a policy banning the leading university from accepting foreign students.
Earlier in 2022, the University of Tokyo had launched a similar program to accommodate researchers and students whose studies were halted due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The program provides free research and accommodation laboratories.
Reported by ANTARA from Kyodo, Monday, May 26, the University of Tokyo said that until the end of March 2024, more than 30 students and researchers had been accepted into the program. In addition to financial support, they also provide Japanese lessons and counseling services.
US President Donald Trump previously revoked Harvard's certification for the "Student and Exchange Visitor Program" (SEVP) which effectively barred the university from accepting new students from other countries.

Foreign students studying there are also asked to move so as not to lose their legal status. However, they are expected to remain registered at Harvard under an interim order by US federal district court.
The University of Tokyo said it was still investigating the plan to accept the Harvard student.
