PSI Needs Political Narrative Reconstruction If Jokowi Joins

JAKARTA UI political observer Cecep Hidayat suspects that the 7th President of the Republic of Indonesia, Joko Widodo (Jokowi) will most likely accept PSI's proposal to occupy the chair of the general chairman.

Because, Jokowi needed a new political mount after he no longer served as president and was fired from the PDIP.

The political party is an important structure in democracy. PSI could be Jokowi's political vehicle to maintain institutional influence," he said, Sunday, May 25, 2025.

According to him, Jokowi was able to strengthen PSI because he fostered many volunteer groups and so far there has been a pattern of soap operas between Jokowi and volunteer groups.

"If Jokowi enters PSI, he can strengthen his network and political control through the party," added Cecep.

Thus, it is not impossible that PSI will get bigger if it is led by Jokowi.

Moreover, the father of Kaesang Pangarep has not even stepped down a year from his position as president and volunteer groups and Jokowi loyalists are also still active in the circle of power.

"Jokowi's volunteers and loyalists still exist. It can be capitalized to boost PSI's electability as long as it is supported by adequate political logistics," continued Cecep.

He also said PSI branding as a political party for young people would not be an obstacle either. PSI is said to only need to reconstruct political narratives to smooth the regeneration and Jalan Jokowi occupies the chair of the general chairman.

"PSI will definitely build a new narrative relevant to Jokowi's position. Our society tends to forget about things like that quickly," he said.

As is known, PSI is preparing to hold a big election to elect a new general chairman.

Jokowi's name strengthened as a candidate for chairman within PSI. In addition, support also came from Jokowi's volunteers, namely Projo, who is optimistic that PSI will become a new political force in Jokowi's hands.

Jokowi himself has responded to the discourse of leading PSI by saying he will consider running for PSI Chairman. "Yes, it is still in circulation. Don't let me lose later," he said in Solo, Central Java, recently.
