JAKARTA - Governor of North Maluku (Malut) Sherly Laos directly inspected the location affected by the tornado in Guraping Sofifi on Friday, May 23.

A tornado occurred in the area on Saturday 17 May at 13.40 WIT.

"The extreme weather that hit a number of areas in Indonesia was also felt by the people of North Maluku. Heavy rain accompanied by strong winds in mid-May 2025 caused physical damage in a number of settlements, one of which was in Guraping Village, North Oba District, Tidore City Islands," said Sherly Laos when contacted, Friday, May 23, confiscated by Antara.

Based on data compiled from the BPBD of North Maluku Province, this incident caused damage to 17 houses with details of 11 houses slightly damaged, five houses moderately damaged, and one unit of worship (mosque) lightly damaged.

Following up on the incident, Sherly instructed the Housing and Settlement Service (Perkim) to record the damage and start the repair process as soon as possible.

"The aid funds are available. I have asked that on Monday the building materials be sent immediately and the renovation process immediately begins," he said.

On this occasion, the Governor also handed over stimulus assistance worth a total of Rp. 78 million to affected residents. This assistance was provided as a form of support and effort to accelerate post-disaster recovery.

"I hope this assistance can be useful for residents and help them reorganize their lives," said Sherly.

The governor and his entourage also took the time to talk directly with the affected residents. In addition to providing moral support, the local government ensures that the recovery and renovation process will be carried out quickly and on target.

"There were no fatalities, but a number of residents' buildings were severely damaged due to heavy rains and strong winds," said North Maluku BPBD Chief Executive, Febby Alting.
