Leaving Liverpool, Darwin Nunez Towards Atletico Madrid
JAKARTA - Striker Darwin Nunez left Liverpool immediately. Although not yet formal, he has reached an agreement to move to Atletico Madrid.
Nunez failed to fulfill her expectations since joining Liverpool from Benfica three years ago. Nunez is indeed a hope after Liverpool lost Roberto Firmino.
By recruiting Nunez, the English Premier League champion hopes that he can become a mainstay goal engine. Moreover, Nunez is from Uruguay. Just like his seniors, Luis Suarez, who successfully demonstrated his greatness in the front lines of the Reds.
Only the expectations against Nunez did not come true. He was only able to score 33 goals during the first two years at Anfield.
This season when Liverpool under new manager Arne Slot, Nunez was eliminated. The 25-year-old forward has only started 17 times in various competitions.
While in the Premier League, Nunez was recorded eight times as the first player. The rest, he only sits on the bench and plays as a substitute.
An irony is that Liverpool had to disburse funds that were not small when they brought Nunez. The 20-time Premier League champion bought it at a price of 84 million which broke the club's transfer record.
Failed to shine at Anfield made Nunez intend to leave even though his contract is still three years away. Atletico became Nunez's destination and played in La Liga Spain opened up opportunities for him to show sharpness again.
According to Cadena SER, Atletico has held talks with Nunez and Liverpool. Nunez's chances of moving seem to be very open because the Reds have no objection to releasing their players to join Diego Simeone's side.
Only the price of Nunez is confirmed to have decreased. Atletico has already submitted a bid for a price of 64 million. That price was indeed lower than Liverpool had ever spent when buying Nunez from Benfica.
