Mount Marapi Erupts Again, Abu Colon Reaches 800 Meters
PADANG - Mount Marapi in Agam Regency and Tanah Datar Regency, West Sumatra (West Sumatra) erupted again on Thursday night with a column height of ash reaching 800 meters above the peak.
"There was an eruption of Mount Marapi at 19.39 WIB with a column height of ash being observed about 800 meters above the peak," said officers at the Volcano Post, Mount Marapi, Teguh, as reported by ANTARA, Thursday, May 15.
Based on monitoring the local Volcano Post, the ash column was observed to be gray with thick intensity leaning towards the east. The eruption was recorded on a seismogram with a maximum amplitude of 23.4 millimeters and was about 56 seconds long.
Referring to data from the local Volcano Post until mid-May 2025, Mount Marapi 2,891 meters above sea level (masl) has erupted nine times with the highest column reaching 1,600 meters above the top of the mountain.
Currently, Mount Marapi is on alert or Level II. The Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) issued a number of recommendations, including prohibiting people, tourists, or visitors from doing activities within a three-kilometer radius from the activity center (Verbeek Luxury).

PVMBG also reminded the threat of cold lava potential, especially for people who live along rivers that originate from the top of the volcano.
This condition is especially during rain or rainy season. Then, if there is rain of public ash, people are advised to use a mask covering the nose and mouth to avoid respiratory tract problems.
