The Day Mick Schumacher Said: I Want To Be A Racer
JAKARTA - The name Schumacher is synonymous with Formula 1 and always will be. And with Michael's son Mick joining the sport, it's good to look back at the day when Mick told his father he wanted to be a racer.
Last December, Mick was signed by the Haas F1 team for a multi-year duration. The 21-year-old racer is a member of the Ferrari Racers Academy.
"I am very happy we can confirm Mick Schumacher into our lineup for next season and I look forward to seeing him in this team," said team head Haas Guenther Steiner at the time.
Mick joins Haas with six years of experience racing in open-wheel racing. Starting his career in the 2015 German ADAC F4 series, Mick advanced to the Formula 3 world championship, winning the title in 2018 thanks to eight wins.
He joined the Ferrari Drivers' Academy in 2019 when he made his Formula 2 debut.Micky tasted his first Formula 1 car in April last season, while helping Ferrari and Alfa Romeo in the pre-season test session in Bahrain for two days.
"I want to thank the Haas F1 team, Scuderia Ferrari and the Ferrari Drivers' Academy for believing in me," said Mick.
"I also want to convey my love for my parents, I know that I owe everything to them. I always believed I would make my dreams come true in Formula 1."
Mick became the third member of the Schumacher family to race in Formula 1 after his father, Michael and uncle Ralf, who won six of the 180 races between 1997 and 2007.
Meanwhile, Michael collected 91 Grand Prix championship trophies and is in second place in the list of riders with the most wins after Lewis Hamilton.

"I was with my father, I remember his reaction well," Mick recalled the moment when he told his father he wanted to be a racer.
"We were at the kart track at Kerpen, we talked and he asked me if racing was a hobby or something I wanted to take seriously," he told La Gazzetta dello Sport.
"I explained to him that it was very serious, and he and my mother always supported me in that decision."
When asked what advice his father gave, Mick detailed his father's words in the same interview.
"He told me that the most important thing is that I enjoy what I do," added Mick.
"Seeing me practice it was very important to him. 'If you like what you do, you will do well' is what he told me."
