Getting To Know Asperger Syndrome, Conditions Linked To Bill Gates
JAKARTA - Bill Gates' youngest daughter, Phoebe Gates, revealed a surprising thing about her father in a recent podcast. In her appearance on the Call Her Daddy podcast, Phoebe mentioned that the Microsoft founder has Asperger's syndrome, a neurodevelopmental condition that is included in the autism spectrum.
This admission came shortly after Bill Gates alluded to his childhood behavior in his latest memoir, Source Code. There, he admitted that he often felt "different" as a child, namely difficulty understanding social gestures, and was very focused on certain projects.
He even mentioned that if he grew up as a child today, he would most likely be diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders.
In the podcast, Phoebe explains that her father often makes the atmosphere awkward because of his social awkwardness, which she thinks is related to these conditions.
What Is Asperger Syndrome?
Reporting from the Times of India page, Asperger syndrome is a neurodevelopmental condition that was once considered a separate diagnosis in the autism spectrum. However, in the latest diagnostic criteria, this syndrome is now included in the Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), especially at a higher level than the spectrum. This is often referred to as the ASD Level 1.
People who have Asperger syndrome usually experience difficulties in social interaction. This shows a recurrent pattern of behavior, and has differences in processing sensory stimulation. Even so, they tend to have an intelligence level above average and do not experience significant language delays.
Although Bill Gates has never officially confirmed that he has Asperger's syndrome diagnosis. Previously, he had admitted most likely to be in the autism spectrum.
In its Source Code memoir released in 2025, Gates recalled his childhood behavior such as excessive focus on projects, difficulty capturing social signs, and is often considered accidental rude.

He noted that as a child, formal tests for ASD were not publicly available. However, if it grows in today's era, it is likely to receive the diagnosis.
Gates' confession of the autism spectrum follows in the footsteps of a number of other public figures, including Elon Musk, who openly admitted to having Asperger syndrome in 2021.
