Receive The Chairman Of The Cambodian Senate Hun Sen At The DPR Tomorrow, Puan Will Discuss The Protection Of PMI

JAKARTA - DPR Speaker Puan Maharani will meet the Chairman of the Cambodian Senate, Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, tomorrow. In his meeting with the former Cambodian Prime Minister, Puan will discuss protection issues for Indonesian migrant workers (PMI).

This meeting is a series of Hun Sen visits to Indonesia on May 5-7, 2025. During an honorary visit with the Chairman of the DPR, Hun Sen was planned to be accompanied by a number of members of the Cambodian Royal Senate.

Puan is scheduled to receive a visit from Hun Sen at the Nusantara building, Parliament complex, Senayan, Jakarta, Wednesday, May 7, morning at around 10:00 WIB. Hun Sen himself has met President Prabowo Subianto at the Palace, Jakarta, Monday, May 5.

In the agenda for tomorrow's meeting, Puan and Hun Sen will also conduct a tour building to the plenary meeting room at the Nusantara Building or Kura-Kura Building. One of the issues that will be discussed at the meeting is related to PMI protection in Cambodia.

According to the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia (KBRI) Cambodia, the death of Indonesian citizens (WNI) in the country has soared. Especially due to online scam practices.

"This should be a reminder of the importance of protecting Indonesian citizens, especially Indonesian migrant workers (PMI)," said Puan, Tuesday, May 6.

Based on data from the Indonesian Embassy in Cambodia, the number of cases of troubled Indonesian citizens (WNIB) has increased by 60 times in the last 5 years from 2020 to 2024. A fairly high spike can be seen from 56 cases in 2020, to 3,310 cases in 2024. The most worrying thing is that 75 percent of these cases are related to Indonesian citizens who are trapped in online scam work.

The Indonesian Embassy in Cambodia has even handled 92 cases of Indonesian citizens' deaths for 2024. Where this number increased 24.3 percent from 2023.

According to Puan, this incident is no longer a domestic issue, but has already entered as a regional emergency. For this reason, Puan felt the need to discuss this issue with Hun Sen.

For information, Hun Sen is the longest-serving head of government in Cambodia, and one of the longest-serving leaders in the world. He is also the President of the Cambodian People's Party (CPP) and a member of the National Assembly for Kandal.

Puan assessed that closer parliamentary relations would strengthen mutual trust and mutual understanding between the two countries. He encouraged strengthening bilateral relations between Indonesia and Cambodia.

In addition, Puan said Indonesia and Cambodia also need to expand cooperation in various sectors. According to the first woman to serve as Chair of the DPR RI, synergies between the government and parliament are needed in overcoming increasingly complex global challenges.

"Parliamentary diplomacy is increasingly needed to build dialogue between countries to deal with multidimensional crises. Parliament must contribute and be part of the solution to global problems," said Puan.
