Neuralink Pockets 'Advanced' Label For Devices That Restore Speech Ability
JAKARTA Neuralink has successfully added brain implants to patients who have speech disorders. This success made the company owned by Elon Musk receive the 'breakthrough' label on its newest device.
This label was given directly by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the US. According to Neuralink's explanation, this latest determination was given to the devices they developed to address very severe speech disorders.
"We have received a Determination of Breakthrough Devices from the FDA to help restore communications for individuals with speech disturbances," Neuralink said in a post on X on Friday, May 2.
The device is specifically designed for patients suffering from amiotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), stroke, spinal cord injury, cerebral pally, multiple sclerosis, and other conditions that attack the nervous system, including the brain and spinal cord.
All of these conditions affect the ability of people to speak. This device has proven to be able to overcome communication problems in patients suffering from ASL so that Neuralink can obtain a 'breakthrough' determination from the FDA.
When a device gets the label, the device has its capabilities verified. That way, service providers can accelerate the development, assessment, and review of their devices to provide timely services to patients.

Brad Smith, an Arizona resident, is the third patient to receive brain implants from Neuralink. This trial patient is the only ALS sufferer and the only non-verbal patient or unable to speak is undergoing surgery.
After conducting a quick operation and undergoing the observation stage for some time, Smith made a post about his situation on social media. He admitted that he was able to communicate even though he was still slow in typing.
"I typed this with my brain. This is my main communication," Smith said via platform X on April 28. "Neuralink has greatly improved the quality of my life. I am very happy to be involved in something big that will help so many people."
