20 Years Not Rising, Transjakarta Tariffs Reviewed

The discourse on increasing Transjakarta rates has re-emerged in discussions between the Governor of DKI Jakarta Pramono Anung, the DKI Jakarta Transportation Service (Dishub), and the Jakarta City Transportation Council (DTKJ).

Head of the DKI Jakarta Transportation Agency, Syafrin Liputo, admitted that until now there has been no decision to increase the Transjakarta tariff. Syafrin said Pramono instructed him to conduct a more in-depth study.

"Yes, the tariff is still Rp. 3,500. We are currently reviewing it as directed by the Governor to be reviewed in more detail," said Syafrin at DKI Jakarta City Hall, Monday, April 28.

Syafrin revealed that Transjakarta tariffs have not actually increased for 20 years or since 2005. This plan to increase public transportation rates has also been proposed for a long time.

"In 2005 the Jakarta UMP was still around Rp800,000, the current Rp3,500 tariff is how much the UMP is, the fare is still Rp3,500," said Syafrin.

Meanwhile, DTKJ Chairman Haris Muhammadun revealed that his party had also made a study on the increase in Transjakarta rates in accordance with current conditions to the Governor and Acting Governor of DKI Jakarta previously, based on the probability to pay/ATP (payability) and willingnes to pay/WTP (availability to pay) the amount of Transjakarta tickets.

"Actually, the ATP-BTP has already been (studied). So, I think this will also be studied technically by the Kadishub team with DTKJ later together to sharpen it," said Harris.

For information, the discourse on increasing Transjakarta rates originated from the Jakarta City Transportation Council (DTKJ) proposal which saw that the transportation mode tariffs managed by the DKI Provincial Government needed to be increased in 2023.

DTKJ, continued Syafrin, proposed an increase because Transjakarta rates had not increased since a dozen years ago. Meanwhile, other modes of transportation such as KRL Commuter Line are planned to increase by Rp. 2,000 from Rp. 5,000.

"The reason is that seeing that Transjakarta's existing tariff of Rp. 3,500 since 2007 has not increased temporarily, on the other hand, transportation mode rates such as KRL will increase. Of course we have to do that related check and check and check and of course there will be an internal survey," explained Syafrin in 2023.

So far, Transjakarta tickets have been subsidized from the APBD of around Rp. 13,000 for a trip because the economic value of the Transjakarta tariff is Rp. 15 thousand per ticket.
