Komnas HAM Group Shot By KKB In Bintuni Bay, DPR Urges Firm Action

JAKARTA - Violence in Papua has occurred again. The Armed Criminal Group (KKB) reportedly shot a group of the National Human Rights Commission (Komnas HAM) in Bintuni Bay, West Papua. This incident sparked strong criticism from member of Commission I of the DPR TB Hasanuddin.

According to Hasanuddin, the KKB action was very brutal and could no longer be tolerated. He asked the government and security forces to act decisively immediately.

"This is clearly a brutal act that threatens the work of state institutions. The government must act decisively," said TB Hasanuddin

The shooting incident occurred when the Head of Komnas HAM Papua Representative Frits Ramandey and his entourage were monitoring the search operation for the former Head of Criminal Investigation Unit of the Bintuni Bay Police, Iptu Tomi S Marbun, which has been missing since December 2024.

In an operation in Kali Rawara, Meyah Lama Village, West Moskona District, the Frits group was fired upon by the KKB from across the river. At least four shots were heard. Luckily, there were no victims in the incident.

"The KKB attack is not only against individuals, but also the authority of the state. This must be stopped!" said TB Hasanuddin.

Hasanuddin emphasized the importance of protecting state officials, including Komnas HAM. He urged the TNI and Polri to increase security and take firm legal steps against perpetrators of armed violence.

In addition to the security approach, TB Hasanuddin also encourages that social approaches and dialogue in Papua be optimized, to address conflicts as a whole. "However, this kind of armed violence must still be fought firmly based on the law," concluded Hasanuddin.

Iptu Tomi S Marbun, former Head of Criminal Investigation Unit of Teluk Bintuni Police, was reported missing while leading the operation to arrest KKB member Marthen Aiking on December 18, 2024. He is suspected of being swept away around Kali Rawara while pursuing the operational target.

The search operation, which was later attacked by the KKB, is still being carried out, involving joint personnel and the National Human Rights Commission for Papua Representatives.
