Despite The Agreement, Experts Ask For The Age Of Retirement Of The TNI To Be Added And Syncted With The Police

JAKARTA - Professor of Political and Security Sciences at Padjadjaran University (Unpad) Muradi agreed to add the retirement age of Indonesian National Army (TNI) soldiers. But it must be synchronized with members of the Indonesian National Police (Polri).

"At the age, I think for non-commissioned and non-commissioned officers 53 to 58 years old, for officers 58 to 60 years old, I think it's okay. However, it must be synchronized with friends at the National Police," Muradi said when contacted by ANTARA from Jakarta, Wednesday, March 5.

Muradi made this statement when asked about the discourse on extending the age of TNI soldiers in the Draft Law on Amendments to Law Number 34 of 2004 concerning the TNI (RUU TNI).

According to him, the addition of the retirement age is not a problem because in some countries it is possible. If the addition of retirement age to 65 years, according to him, it is only allowed for medical and non-combatan soldiers.

"Combatation means this, he only works in military health, but does not cover matters of holding command and so on. That is the most important thing, but it needs to be regulated in PP (government regulations)," he said.

He explained that the derivative PP of the revised TNI Law would later need to regulate soldiers within the TNI who can retire for up to 65 years.

"Lecturers at the Defense University (Defense University) allow 65 years. 65 years old is the same as in BRIN (National Research and Innovation Agency). Likewise medicine, he also allows it," he explained.

It is said that this needs to be regulated because currently there are a number of soldiers who have to retire early following Law Number 34 of 2004 concerning the TNI. In fact, he said, they hold functional positions.

Based on Article 53 of the current TNI Law, officers can carry out military services up to 58 years, then 53 years for non-commissioned and non-commissioned officers.

Previously, Commission I of the Indonesian House of Representatives in charge of defense held a public hearing meeting (RDPU) during March 4, 2025 to hear input from experts and non-governmental organizations on issues related to the TNI Bill.

One of the inputs discussed in the RDPU is the extension of the retirement age of TNI soldiers.
