Safe Salt Consumption Limits To Prevent Hypertension

JAKARTA - Salt is a kitchen spice where the amount of consumption must be considered by everyone. Consumption of salt suggested by the Indonesian Ministry of Health and WHO on its official website is 5 grams or one teaspoon of salt per day.

However, it should be noted that the consumption of salt by the Indonesian people is actually more than recommended. More than 50 percent of Indonesians consume excessive salt.

"Salt consumption, reiterate the importance of our diet, don't forget in Southeast Asia, especially in Indonesia, the consumption of salt is high," said dr. BRM. Ario Soeryo Kuncoro, Sp.JP(K), FIHA, Secretary General of InASH, at The 19th Scientific Meeting of Inash, some time ago.

This is certainly worrying and must be watched out for. This is because excessive consumption of salt is a risk factor for someone exposed to hypertension to increase.

Hypertension is a condition when the blood pressure in a person's arteries exceeds the normal limit. A person with hypertension if his blood pressure is consistently 140/90 mmHg or higher.

"High salt is indeed one of the risk factors for hypertension," he said.

Doctor Kuncoro said excessive consumption of salt every day would make blood pressure uncontrollable, which could cause hypertension. Therefore, it is recommended that people reduce salt to foods consumed daily.

"But this is related to chronic nature. It doesn't mean that if we eat a block of salt, the tension goes up. But the salt content we eat from daily food, it affects the process of uncontrolled blood pressure," concluded Doctor Kuncoro.
