Foreign Minister Sugiono Discusses Economic Cooperation To Borders With The Foreign Minister Of Timor Leste

JAKARTA - Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia Sugiono discussed economic cooperation issues, accessing ASEAN to national borders when receiving the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Timor-Leste Bendito dos Santos Freitas in Jakarta, Monday.

"The partnership between Indonesia and Timor-Leste continues to develop with the spirit of brotherhood. We want to ensure that this collaboration provides concrete benefits for the people of the two countries," said Foreign Minister Sugiono in a statement from the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on March 3.

Furthermore, Foreign Minister Sugiono appreciated the economic cooperation between the two countries which continues to grow. Indonesia is Timor-Leste's main trading partner, with the trade value in 2024 reaching 391.3 million US dollars, an increase of 12.31 percent compared to the previous year.

"I appreciate the progress of Bilateral Investment Treaty negotiations. The acceleration of Indonesia's investment license, including SOE operations in Timor-Leste, is very important to encourage closer economic cooperation," said Foreign Minister Sugiono.

On this occasion, Foreign Minister Sugiono also emphasized Indonesia's commitment as Timor-Leste's development partner. Indonesia is ready to strengthen its support for Timor-Leste's national development through further collaboration.

Indonesia also affirms its support for Timor-Leste's full membership in ASEAN, including through capacity building programs.

"Timor-Leste is part of the ASEAN family, and Indonesia is ready to support the steps towards full integration," said Foreign Minister Sugiono.

Regarding border issues, the two foreign ministers are committed to resolving border issues constructively, based on a good neighboring spirit and the principle of mutual respect.

"The complete border settlement will open up economic opportunities and increase the connectivity of border communities," said Foreign Minister Sugiono.

It is known that the cooperation in the development of Indonesia and Timor Leste in recent years has continued to grow, including in the form of diplomatic training, financial management reform, scholarships and accultural development.

Closing the meeting, Foreign Minister Sugiono reiterated Indonesia's commitment to continue strengthening strategic partnerships with Timor-Leste.

The two Foreign Ministers also agreed to revitalize the Joint Ministerial Commission (JMC) as a strategic forum at the Foreign Minister's level to review and develop bilateral cooperation.
