Kintsugi Philosophy, How To Turn Wounds Into Japanese Arts
YOGYAKARTA - What if the injured soul can be healed like a broken object? In Japan, through the philosophy of kintsugi, it seems possible.
However, kintsugi is not just about improving objects, but also about celebrating history, receiving wounds, and appreciating the recovery process. Curious? Here's the discussion.
Reporting from the azumiuchitani page, "Kintsugi" literally means sewing with gold in Japanese. This is a Japanese form of art to fix broken fire with pernis (URUSHI), sprinkled with gold, or silver.
The method of repairing broken pottery with pernis has been traced back to prehistoric times in ancient prehistoric pottery. However, around the 16th century, Kintsugi became known as a form of art along with the philosophy of the Tea Ceremony, Wabi Sabi.
One of the 4 principles of the tea ceremony is "Hormat". Respect and appreciate what we use, and what we meet. Wabi Sabi is feeling the beauty of what it is today.
The broken part is truly accepted and valued as the history of the object, as a form of art, rather than disguised by perfect improvement. With Kintsugi, the object breaking is transformed into a unique work of art.
Japanese Kintsugi is not just repairing broken objects with gold, but has a more in-depth meaning and teachings about our attitude towards life.

With Kintsugi's mindset, when something breaks, you don't analyze how the damage happens, and you see something broken without judgment. On the other hand, you accept things as they are.
Through Kintsugi, you see a shining opportunity to recreate this object, with gold. The history of the damage will shine as if celebrating that it still exists, even more beautiful.
Kintsugi art is the healing of the mind from past bad events and turning it into something bigger.
The damaged part will never be removed or disguised, it remains a scar but as a unique design with only one in the world.
When you can embrace everything as it is without judgment (with a peaceful heart) then that is healing. You heal yourself and within, the outside world will also heal.
In general, humans tend to hide their shortcomings, wounds, and damaged parts, because they are programmed to define them in a negative way.
But once humans dare to accept the facts and embrace them as they are (without adding judgment and criticism) the old pain will be a unique form of shining art that we will begin to appreciate.
It is hoped that the pain will turn into love and we will also become more loving to others. This is a process of personal transformation and engineering to overcome personal trauma.
Humans often push emotional pain away, or pretend that pain doesn't exist and we continue to live. But years later, this pain surfaced unexpectedly in different forms. This phenomenon is commonly called Inner Child.
If you have trauma, then it's time to deal with it, see that the pain exists like a broken cup. Embrace this emotion gently, such as attaching broken fragments to the main body, and bringing painful fragments to unite with yourself.
Imagineharging it and sowing it with beautiful gold. You are now united with that gold patch.
