Russia Aligns Its Position With Iran Regarding Nuclear Programs

JAKARTA - Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Iranian leaders align their positions on issues surrounding Iran's nuclear program in talks in Tehran on Tuesday, the Russian Foreign Ministry said.

Foreign Minister Lavrov discussed various bilateral and regional issues with President Masoud Pezeshkian, as well as his reasons for Iran's main diplomat Seyed Abbas Araghchi, the ministry statement said.

"Posisi-posisi diselarakan terkait situasi seputar Rencana Aksi Komprehensif Bersama (JCPOA) tentang Program Nuklir Iran," kata kementerian, melansir Reuters 26 Februari.

Russia is a signator of the 2015 JCPOA agreement with the US, China, France, Britain and Germany. The deal lifted sanctions against Iran in exchange for restrictions on its nuclear activities

Earlier, Foreign Minister Lavrov said in Tehran Moscow believed diplomatic measures were still available to resolve issues surrounding Iran's nuclear program.

On the occasion Foreign Minister Lavrov discussed various bilateral and regional issues during his visits, including Syria, Lebanon and Afghanistan as well as the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, the Russian foreign ministry said.

Last week, International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director-General Rafael Grossi said Iran continues to enrich uranium far beyond the need for commercial nuclear use despite UN pressure to stop it.

Grossi told Reuters, although uranium enrichment rates have slowed slightly since late last year, Iran is still enriching uranium at a high rate of about 7 kg per month to 60 percent purity.

Iran denies seeking nuclear weapons, but no other country has enriched uranium to that level without producing it.

Grossi said he wanted to visit Tehran next month for the first time in a year.

It is known that Russia and Iran have been getting closer in recent years, with Iran supporting Russia in its military campaign in Ukraine. Both sides signed a strategic partnership agreement in January.

Russian news agency reported Foreign Minister Lavrov then continued his journey from Iran to Qatar.
