Pakistani Army Kills 30 Militants In South Waziristan

JAKARTA - Pakistan's army killed 30 Islamist militants in South Waziristan near the border with Afghanistan in an operation to clean up tribal districts from militants operating in both countries.

This non-legally tribal region is a haven for Islamic militants. This area is prohibited for independent journalists and human rights groups, making it difficult to independently verify any information.

The militants have waged a war against the Pakistani state in an attempt to overthrow the government and replace it with a strict Islamic government system and run by sharia.

The army, in a statement, did not provide further details about the militants and what groups they might follow.

The militants have accelerated their attacks since they lifted a ceasefire with the government by the end of 2022.

Islamabad said militants ran a training camp in Afghanistan and planned an attack on Pakistan, a charge Kabul denies.
