Minister Of Law Calls Amnesty 19 Thousand Prisoners Announced Before Eid

JAKARTA - Minister of Law Supratman Andi Agtas said amnesty of 19 thousand prisoners (convicts) is targeted to be announced before Eid Al-Fitr 2025, and also before the announcement of granting remissions to other inmates.

Initially, the government planned to grant remissions to 44 thousand inmates. However, this figure fell to 19 thousand inmates after his party verified and assessed again.

"Hopefully we will continue to improve and adjust, especially regarding the 4 criteria," Supratman said during a meeting with Commission XIII of the DPR RI at the Parliament Complex, Jakarta, Antara, Monday, February 17.

However, he said that the number of 19 thousand prisoners who will receive remission is also uncertain. Because the government continues to carry out verification stages for the prisoners.

In addition, he said that the government also accommodates aspirations related to granting amnesty, including proposals submitted by members of the Indonesian House of Representatives from the Papua constituency regarding armed criminal groups (KKB). According to him, the amnesty proposal will also be submitted to the President.

"If there is a letter and especially if there is a statement that we want to integrate and loyalty to the Republic, I don't think this amnesty is the first time we have done it," he said.

According to him, the previous government had granted amnesty to all people who had been involved in separatism in Aceh in the past. So, he considered that granting amnesty to people involved in the KKB was not impossible.

"There is no problem because this is our effort in order to build dialogue and as a nation of one unit, of course we want the same thing as our friends, brothers and sisters in Papua," he said.
