Controlling Kawumu Airport, M23 Congo Rebels Now Enter The Second Largest Kta

JAKARTA - Rwanda-backed M23 rebels entered the second largest city in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, Bukavu, on Friday local time.

This was conveyed by a rebel leader to Reuters, when residents reported seeing militants on the streets of the northern district.

Earlier on Friday, February 14, Congolese soldiers confirmed M23 fighters had taken control of Kawumu airport, north of Bukavu. Meanwhile, Congo's troops have withdrawn with their combat equipment.

Rebels have been trying to move south towards Bukavu since they seized Goma, the largest city in eastern Congo, at the end of last month.

Bukavu's race, the capital of South Kivu province, will represent an unprecedented expansion of territory under the control of the M23 since the latest uprising began in 2022, and dealt further blows to Kinshasa authorities in the east.

"I confirm that we are entering Bukavu tonight, and tomorrow, we will continue operations to clean up the city," said Corneille Nangaa, leader of the Congo River Alliance, which includes M23.

Two residents in the northern part of Bukavu named Bagira said they saw rebels on the streets and there were no signs of fighting.

"Their uniform is different. We have been preparing since noon for their arrival. The FARDC (military army) has left. There have been no clashes," said Helene resident, who told how he saw the rebels passing through his window.

Earlier, Congo's military spokesman Syl Marijud Ekenge said troops had been withdrawn after the seizure of the airport.

He did not say where they were stepping down, but Congo and Burundi forces were seen leaving the main military camp of Bukavu, Saio, during the day, two residents and one UN source said.

"They withdrew to avoid fighting in densely populated areas," said one resident who lives near the camp.
