Victims Still Fall After Ceasefire Agreement, UN Urges Israel To Withdraw Troops From South Lebanon
JAKARTA - United Nations (UN) experts urged Israel to honor the ceasefire agreement with Lebanon and immediately stop home destruction. Including withdrawing troops from South Lebanon.
"We are deeply concerned about the ongoing impact on civilians in Lebanon. Within 60 days of the ceasefire taking effect, at least 57 civilians have been killed, and 260 properties have been destroyed", the UN experts said in a statement Thursday, February 13, quoted from Antara, Friday, February 14.
The ceasefire agreement takes effect on 27 November 2024. This agreement requires Israeli forces to withdraw completely from South Lebanon within 60 days.
When the initial deadline for the withdrawal of Israeli troops from Lebanon ended on January 26, 2025, UN experts said Lebanese civilians who tried to return to their occupied towns and villages faced "shots from Israeli soldiers".
As a result, 24 Lebanese were killed and 120 others injured.
"Violations of violence continue even after a new deadline for the full withdrawal of Israeli troops was set on February 18, 2025, with at least two civilians killed and 80 injured in just four days."
"We are furious, the killing of civilians and the systematic destruction of homes, agricultural land, and other important infrastructure in South Lebanon continues despite a ceasefire agreement," they added.
Israel's military action has sparked an increasingly prolonged humanitarian crisis as a result of attacks that hinder continued solutions for refugees. Violations of human rights laws and international humanitarian law must be stopped immediately, they stressed.
