This Developer Creates WikiTok, A Wikipedia Site Designed Similar To TikTok
JAKARTA Wikipedia is a popular website that provides information about a place, object, or well-known figure. Basically, this website will not be visited if it is not necessary.
Someone will visit Wikipedia if they need information, in contrast to social media that is always accessed by the public even though it is not necessary. Isaac Gemal, a New York app developer, tries to fight this habit.
To turn Wikipedia into an interactive platform, Gemal created a website called WikiTok. The idea is very simple, namely presenting Wikipedia information with algorithms that are random and the vertical display resembles the TikTok platform.
WikiTok can be visited on wikitok.vercel.app. When the website is opened, visitors will see footage of information with a background that matches the title. If the information displayed is Lake Fianga, then the background is the lake.
Whenever rolling out the screen, visitors to the website will see new information that is not personalized. This means that Gemal will not display information based on the interest of visitors to the website. Every time the website is refreshed, the information will change.

Gemal told Arstechnica that he rejected calls to display the flow of Wikipedia articles according to the user's interests. Currently, Gemal will only present a random list of Wikipedia articles originating from the website API.
The view of the WikiTok interface is very simple. If visitors are interested in the preview of the information they see, they can tap the Read More option at the bottom. If they like the information displayed, they can press the Like button or Share it.
There are various languages that visitors to the website can choose from English, Dutch, French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, and many more. You can also choose the Indonesian language option through the Language menu in the upper right corner of the screen.
