Fake KPK Employees Ask For IDR 1 Billion From The Former Regional Head With Fake Letters

JAKARTA - Three people who allegedly worked together to extort a former regent were arrested by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) on Wednesday, February 5. One of them even claimed to be an investigator.

This allegation of extortion began when the former regent's family received a short message via the WhatsApp application containing a photo of an envelope of a brown letter with a fake KPK letterhead.

"This is claimed to be a summons for the KPK examination," the source told VOI, Wednesday, February 5.

Furthermore, there was a meeting between the family and the sender of the message which claimed that the letter would be sent by the KPK and would arrive in early February.

The sender of this message then urged the family of the former regent to come to Jakarta and meet 'abang'. This figure is called an investigator but it turns out to be fake.

Then there was a request for money of Rp. 1 billion from the former regent's family.

Because he continued to be urged, the family of the former regent agreed to a meeting in Jakarta, precisely at the Borobudur Hotel. The fake investigator called 'abang' also came wearing a black jacket.

This suit is exactly the same as the one used by the glasses man who was led by officers at the KPK's Merah Putih building, Kuningan Persada, South Jakarta after the arrest was carried out.

"At around 19.02 the KPK team then secured the parties. Three people were arrested," still according to the same source.

Meanwhile, KPK spokesman Tessa Mahardhika confirmed that one of the parties arrested claimed to be an investigator.

"KPK has arrested a number of people who have committed alleged extortion crimes against officials within the East Nusa Tenggara Provincial Government. One of them claims to be KPK employees," he told reporters at the KPK's Merah Putih building, Kuningan Persada, South Jakarta, Thursday, February 6.

This case has been handled by the Central Jakarta Police. The KPK reminded the public not to just believe in those who claim to be able to take care of the case.

"If you experience or know about the incident, the public can convey it to the KPK via call center 198 or through the KPK public complaint service in the complaint email @kpk.go.id or via WhatsApp message 0811959575," said Tessa.

"Every task implementation, both in case handling, socialization and other corruption prevention programs, the KPK does not charge and the employee is equipped with a letter of assignment and official identity from the KPK," continued the spokesman with the investigator's background.
