Minister Of Home Affairs: The National Capital Is Still In Jakarta

JAKARTA - Minister of Home Affairs (Mendagri) Muhammad Tito Karnavian emphasized that until now Jakarta is still the capital city of the country legally.

This was conveyed by Tito when explaining the location for the inauguration of regional heads as a result of the 2024 simultaneous regional elections at the Working Meeting held by Commission II of the DPR at the DPR building, Senayan, Jakarta, Monday, February 3.

"I want to emphasize here, because I see in various news, the capital city of the state is considered the capital city of the archipelago (IKN). In accordance with the law, the movement of the capital city must be stipulated by a Presidential Regulation (Perpres)," Tito said as quoted by ANTARA.

He said Jakarta still functions as the nation's capital until the transfer to IKN is officially stipulated through applicable regulations.

The gradual inauguration of regional heads will take place in Jakarta in accordance with existing legal provisions.

"While the Perpres is not yet operational (IKN) as the capital city of the country, the capital remains in Jakarta. Even though the name Jakarta has become a Special Region for Jakarta," he said.

Previously, Minister of Home Affairs Tito Karnavian revealed that President Prabowo Subianto chose February 20, 2025 to hold the inauguration of regional heads.

Tito previously proposed the 18th, 19th, 20 February to hold the inauguration of a non-dispute regional head and the results of the decision were dismissal by the Constitutional Court (MK) to President Prabowo.

"We are checking about the 18th, 19th, 20th and I report to the President and the president conveys that he chose the 20th (February), Thursday," Tito said at a Working Meeting held by Commission II of the DPR RI at the Parliament Complex, Senayan, Jakarta, Monday.

Tito explained that the date was chosen after his party adjusted to the dismissal decision to be held by the Constitutional Court.
